Top International Car Rental Agencies

Major car rental agencies tend to have an international presence and high brand visibility that is a result of their decades of service. They have branches around the globe and often offer franchise opportunities. All of these well-known brands coordinate international rentals through online services that allow renters to comparison shop before booking a rental.

Hertz

Hertz is the largest global car rental agency with nearly 10,000 branches in over 145 countries around the world. It is also the oldest, having been established in the United States in 1918. One of the most interesting aspects of Hertz is its “Fun Collection” which allows people to rent racing and high-end sports cars. These cars are available at select airport-based Hertz rental agencies. Hertz also has a “Green Collection” for environmentally-conscious renters. These include hybrids and electric vehicles.

Avis Rent A Car

As the second largest car rental agency in the world, it has a major presence in North America, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. Avis is often associated with airports because they are a major provider of car rentals for travelers, both business and leisure, who pick up their cars at the airport. In addition, the company opened the very first airport-based car rental agency.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car

Enterprise is part of the largest car rental network that currently exists in the world. The network includes Alamo Rent A Car, National Car Rental, and Europacar. Enterprise was established in 1957. With nearly 7,000 locations in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Germany, it has a strong international presence.

Alamo Rent A Car

Alamo is now owned by the Enterprise Holdings, the parent company of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, but it still operates as an independent cheap car rental business. It was established in 1974 and was the first car rental company to offer unlimited free mileage to its customers who were primarily leisure travelers. It currently has more than 1,000 branches in North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Australia, Africa, and throughout the

Asian-Pacific area. Travelers can take advantage of nearly 160 self-serve kiosks across the United States. Approximately 15 million drivers use their services annually.

National Car Rental

Along with Alamo, National Rental is a member of the Enterprise family. It was established in 1954 and now has over 3,000 branches in North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asian-Pacific, Europe, Australia, and Africa. They were the first car rental company to offer one-way car rentals, flat rates, and a frequent-renter program to customers. In addition to daily specials and regular discounts, customers benefit from larger agencies because they typically offer lower base rates. Customers who want cheap car rental rates prefer top international rental agencies.

Gulf of Mexico Takes Center Stage at the State of the Gulf of Mexico SUMMIT2011, Hosted by Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies

Corpus Christi, TX (PRWEB) November 04, 2011

During December 4 8, 2011, at the Omni Galleria in Houston, Texas, hundreds of experts and leaders from academic institutions, government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector will come together at the 2nd State of the Gulf of Mexico Summit (SGM SUMMIT2011).

Unprecedented cooperation has established the groundwork for this diverse conference. Leaders have contributed their time and resources in preparation for this high-level event. “Bringing these experts together to focus attention on the Gulf of Mexico creates a level of synergy that is critical to developing solutions. We all understand the importance of an economically and environmentally sustainable Gulf of Mexico,” said Dr. Larry McKinney, Harte Research Institute’s Executive Director. “At SGM SUMMIT2011, our goal is to devise a plan to make sure we get there.

A unique feature of the SGM SUMMIT2011 is an emphasis on developing an effective report card that can be used by resource managers and decision makers in science and business to understand the impacts of our activity. “A credible report card focuses public attention and generates support for actions essential to assuring a healthy and productive Gulf,” said McKinney. “This Report Card directly benefits industry’s need for objective ocean data and helps establish the baseline for ongoing review and trend assessment.”

A yearlong series of stepping stone meetings and workshops has preceded the SGM SUMMIT2011 — some in direct support of the Summit and some contributing to it. The Nature Conservancy led a coalition of conservation groups which included the Ocean Conservancy and National Wildlife Federation, among others, to develop a common restoration strategy for the Gulf. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) led a similar international effort in Mexico.

A newly formed organization, The Gulf of Mexico University Research Collaborative (GOMURC), comprised of 66 members from the leading marine research organizations in the Gulf of Mexico, will roll out a plan at the summit to assure that management and restoration goals are built on the best available science foundation. And, the Gulf Alliance, whose initial work started at the first summit, will bring together state and federal resource managers and leaders at the summit to enhance its role the one of the leading regional governance frameworks in the nation.

Through the work of the Harte Research Institute and the Gulf of Mexico Foundation, leading business and industries from oil and gas to tourism and agriculture have joined in supporting the SGM SUMMIT2011. As the 2010 oil spill dramatically emphasized, we must interact with the Gulf of Mexico as partners. Assuring a healthy Gulf is important for enjoyable recreation, profitable commerce, and a sustainable environment.

The worlds oceans, and the Gulf of Mexico in particular, need all of our best efforts to assure their future, stated Dr. Sylvia Earle, renown oceanographer and Chair of the HRI Advisory committee. This valuable resource faces many challenges and the SGM SUMMIT2011 brings focus on how we can meet them.

Facilitating these relationships is at the center of The Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies’ mission. Located at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, this unique institute was endowed by Ed Harte, with a challenge to make a difference in the Gulf of Mexico. SGM SUMMIT2011 offers an unprecedented opportunity to interact with those who know the Gulf of Mexico best.

The four day SGM SUMMIT2011 agenda will cover a broad range of important issues focusing on vision, science, commerce, and cooperation. During the summit, leaders of the “Presidents Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force will head a panel to discuss the status and implementation strategies in the Restoration Plan; the conservation and expansion of marine protected areas will be explored; and, CEOs from organizations representing key stakeholders in the Gulf will participate in an evening panel to share their thoughts.

Sponsors of the SGM SUMMIT2011 include: Friends of HRI, The Harte Research Institute, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Shell, IUCN, The Gulf of Mexico Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, BP, GOMURC, National Wildlife Federation, NOAA, USGS, Ocean Conservancy, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Gulf of Mexico Alliance, Port of Corpus Christi, and Mote Marine Lab.

The initial SGM Summit, held in 2006, brought together world-renowned scientists with leaders of government, business and industry, conservation, and resource management to plan for the long-term sustainable quality of life in the Gulf. SGM SUMMIT2011 will build on that work to facilitate sound strategies essential to the prosperity of the United States, Mexico and Cuba.

The Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, located on the Texas A&M University Corpus Christi campus, was founded in 2000 with a $ 46 million grant from Mr. Ed Harte. Its mission is to support and advance the long-term health of the Gulf of Mexico both economically and ecologically.

The problems of airline industry and cheap tickets

Airlines spend a vast amount of capital money on buying the planes and crewing as well as maintaining them. To earn a realistic rate of return on this investment, they must maximize the number of seat sold. Twenty years ago, this was straightforward. Air travel was the accepted way to move long distances, whether for business or pleasure. Only a small percentage of the population were prepared to drive long distances. Following 9/11, the need to maintain a high level of security has forced airports and airlines into major changes. Many of these changes have created difficulties and reduced the number of people prepared to fly. With rising gas prices, many people now stay home or drive only short distances for holidays. Recognizing the problem, the US has been holding a number of consultations with interested parties including Airlines for America, the trade association representing the airlines. The need is to promote travel and tourism without sacrificing safety and security.

As to international travel, the american market has already lost a great volume of business from the countries that used to be able to visit on their own passports without a visa. Now advance notice of an intention to travel to the US must be given and, upon arrival, people are fingerprinted, retina scans are taken and, from their point of view, they are treated as little better than criminals or terrorists. No countries treat American citizens in this way. Tens of thousands of potential tourists are therefore voting with their feet and refusing the visit America. Why should this matter? In 2011, only sixty million people visited USA. Nevertheless, they spent spent about $135 billion and paid for about 7 million jobs in the hotel, food and beverage, and retail markets. When you add in domestic travel, travel contributed about $1 trillion to spending. The US government has therefore committed itself to speed up the visa application process and to make the Visa Waiver Program more welcoming. In this, the US government has accepted the need for there to be equal treatment between countries. This means employing far more staff and upgrading the computer systems to allow passengers to be processed more quickly.

So can offering cheap air tickets help the industry?

As to purely domestic travel, the government is reviewing the current security systems. In doing so, it is acknowledging that many now consider the procedures to get on a plane excessive. In particular, they consider some parts of the process highly intrusive. Again, this is all a question of balance, looking for a compromise that will respect a legitimate desire for privacy against the need to prevent terrorists from interfering with flights. With so great a contribution being made to national consumption, both state and federal authorities have to consider how best to bring more people back to air travel. This is not just a case of offering cheap tickets. People have been driven away by some very poor PR and it will take a serious effort by all interested parties to restore trust and confidence. This does not deny that cheap air tickets will help. The low-cost, discount airlines have proved there is a real market for budget travel. But even there, problems arise with a lack of transparency on prices. Everyone needs to work together to boost air travel’s appeal.
